Is this 5.2 "Python for Beginners", the Bacteria challenge?
I believe the challenge states that you have 500 bacteria which doubles every hour.
How many bacteria are there after 24hrs?
The problem now, is to determine which problem you have.
Is it the logic you don't understand, or the syntax of the code?
If it is the logic, then consider this.
500 *2 = 1000 -> 2**1
500 *4 = 2000 -> 2**2
500 *8 = 4000 -> 2**3
500 *16 = 8000 -> 2**4
etc.....
