Online learning is effective it bridges the gap of the learners lack of knowledge with material that can be accessible to anyone. With online courses I feel you have more control in terms of the progress that you would like to achieve. Take Udemy for example, one does not have to physically appear at a university but is able to gain the knowledge portrayed at the comfort of their own home, however saying this college and courses offered by colleges are essential as they offer a more standardized and recognizable form of education in my opinion.

On the topic of mentors, mentors are important as they will guide you in the correct paths as to where to begin your journey when picking a field such as development.With the right mentor you will be on track in achieving the goals you have set out to do.
