This is what worked for me:
After completing the CSS (and HTML) course on this site, I got to working on a mock website at my workplace. In simple, I got to practice. Problems arose in areas where I had not quite understood or where I thought I had understood but then applying called for a different perspective. Then, I would go back into the app for a recap or use google (most of the results would lead me to csstricks.com, a comprehensive css website). It was fun and I should say it contributed 60% to really understanding css. You could try doing so, it works and CSS is so much fun.
