Is python actually General purpose ?

They say python is a general purpose language but actually I don't think it is . You need libraries for almost everything you want to build .And these libraries are built in other languages . Doesn't that mean it's not really a general purpose language ?

Richard That is how general purpose programming languages works. For example, php is not general purpose. It is just for Web development. So you doesn't need to import anything for Web development. You want python to import everything at startup and load your memory with those functions which you are not even going to use ?? This is too much inefficient. Even a noob programmer will not make a interpreter like that

"general-purpose" has a pretty vague meaning. one thing for sure though, that meaning has nothing to do with what languages its libraries are built with. general purpose cleaner can be used to clean many things. can i clean my clothes or wash my floor with dish soap: yes i can if i wanted to, because it is soap, i can even wash my body with dish soap. so dish soap is general purpose, but maybe i should use better options to wash my body and my clothes. (dont actually wash your skin with dish soap as it may be bit hard on the skin) python is like dish soap. you can use it to do anything and it is also cheap trick language. should you really use python for anything though? the real difficult question: what is a non-general-purpose language? i saw somebody mention PHP, but even that, others can consider it general as well.

There is nothing like general purpose. Python is uses almost everywhere. Libraries makes your work easier just simple as that.

If it was a general purpose language, then maybe it can now be used in operating system or kernel development.

Ipang I'd argue that general-purpose doesn't mean all-purpose.

Simon Saulter, It's okay cause open ended topics almost always have some things to argue about.

"a general-purpose programming language is a programming language dedicated to a general-purpose" Wikipedia Very illuminating. ;)

Language can interact with system and system software then we can say that it can be called operable system element of heterogeneous environment. It has interface with system software then it can be called general-purpose software and it needs network and interoperability. It has syntax and has parser then it is one of the kind of language of computer programming.
