WordPress is a monolithic dinosaur that devours all but the most seasoned veterans. Knowing a bit of PHP is not enough to create a WordPress theme. You would need to also know HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and then work on getting familiar with WP nuances, frameworks, and other things. Is it easy? No. Is it possible? Sure. Is it worth it? Not unless you can create something better than DIVI. So in light of that, I'd recommend you focus on making child themes for well established themes (such as Divi) vs trying to to start from scratch. It will save you countless hours of frustration. (Take it from a WP dev who's been doing this for over 10 years.)
