html to css then JavaScript followed by php makes more sense to me. But that's just my preference

HTML -> CSS -> JavaScript -> jQuery -> PHP. After you can start learn SQL.

It sort of depends. If you're planning to use web development solely for information sites, learn CSS next, which makes HTML look good. However, if you want to make more "dynamic" sites (such as web games) learn JavaScript, which makes things happen on the site.

@ Amaizu Peter CSS ,JS, then PHP. If you want to be a professional, you NEED CSS AND JS. CSS is more important than JavaScript in web design, so learn that first.

next thing to learn is css, after that js and jquery/angularjs/rest if you plan to do only front-end development. If you want to learn back-end development too then php(or some other language but php is most common around) and sql
