Ordering coins with least possible resources

Hi all. I have a question regaring JavaScript: What is the fastest/least resource intensive way of determing the least amount of coins, a certain amount can be converted to? Context: I have been trying to make a function for a Dungeons & Dragons character sheet in Adobe Acrobat DC (which uses JavaScript), and all methods I've found so far are very labour intensive, by either counting or guessing.
