Front-end is what the visitors to the website see: the layout, the content on the page, etc. Back-end, however, is how that website runs: how the code communicates, how the database is organized, etc. Think of it as a store - the front is what the costumer sees, they don't see the shipments of product being ordered they just see it already on the shelf. In the back of the store is where inventory is ordered and organized before reaching the shelf.
