What programming a begginer should learn?

As there are lot of programming languages to learn from, which one is the best for a fresher/beginner to learn. Perl, Python, Ruby etc... which one? please comment, so that it would help some one to build strong foundation.

While Python may seem the easiest to learn, I recommend a low level language like C++ to start so it will be easier to learn other languages as you progress.
