Newcomer to robotics

I'm looking to get into robotics as a hobby, so I was wondering, is C++ a good language for this purpose? I am 100% willing to deal with the somewhat high learning curve and difficulty of the language as long as it is a good choice for robotics. Once I have enough money I will be buying an arduino starter kit and I need a programming language to program said arduino. I have heard arduino is also compatible with Python, which is easier to learn, but runs way, way slower that C++ and is an interpreted instead of typed language. Any advice as to which one I should choose from advanced programmers would be greatly appreciated.
