Unicode is a standard for how text is stored. Computers only work in bits, it has no way of just storing a letter like 'W' natively. So we use standards like Unicode to store text. Unicode assigns a number to a character, that's it. This number is then able to be stored in a computer. Unicode is just a mapping of characters to numbers.
