I have thought about it in the past but it is well beyond my capabilities and too big of a task on your own.

I think, most of us once in a life time thought about making a custum OS. But it takes a lot of time and energy, knowledge to create one! I would say just install a linux based dristibutor and customize as your need. Thats better.
