https://www.sololearn.com/Copyright-Policy/ ^Just in case you're curious about their policy. Now to the point, if they gave credit to the author, but the author did NOT authorize them to distribute it, then it's STILL copyright infringement because they weren't authorized to distribute it. Copyright is tricky and most often someone is copy/pasting it and slapping the author's name on it, but their intent is simply to get more likes or something like that. With that being said, if you save it but you keep it PRIVATE then you're fine because the author made the code public and you're not distributing it. Since it is hard to tell if someone on SoloLearn stole it or was given permission, I would ask the original author and report it if they weren't aware of it. If you know it's copied and there are no credits given, then report it to SoloLearn OR inform the original author so they can handle it as they see fit.

If the copied code doesn't have any credits, you could mindlessly report it. But if it has proper credits, the copied code will only be privatized if the original author asks to do so. You could inform the original author about the copied code and let them decide what to do next.

(lol Josh) Echoing Kainatic and AgentSmith, you can ask who you think is the original author via (direct) Messaging if they have authorized republication of insert-link-here, but if I recall correctly, iOS users still don't have this feature yet. What would probably help everyone looking on is if the question was posed in a comment in the Code Playground project in question and you @ mentioned whomever you think is the original author (plus link to the original code/project). That way, if they have provided (or ended up providing) authorization, it's "public" record and they shouldn't have others pinging them again about the same issue in the future. If you're not comfortable with asking original authors directly, feel free to report it in the Stay Safe thread for a moderator to follow up on. We'd rather you focus on enjoying the platform and being eyes and ears for the community (if you want to be) than risk potential repercussions from offenders that might ruin your enjoyment. I hope this helps. 🙂

I know it feels really bad when someone copies mine or yours code and when we see it on ourselves, it feels even worse...I feel that reporting does not DO anything instead, sololearn should make or design something which would actually copyright the original author's code...

フ卂卂Ꮆ尺卂ᐯ In most jurisdictions, saving the code automatically confers copyrights to the author. So, in effect, SoloLearn already has a function (the Save button) to "actually copyright the original author's code" so to speak. Some jurisdictions require authors to register their work(s) to have the full range of legal protections available to them. When it comes to conflicts (when multiple authors claim ownership of the same intellectual property), these are usually arbitrated, settled, or adjudicated through the legal process. It is the responsibility of copyright holders to take adequate measures to protect their own works. As per the Terms of Use, users can send official notices (generally drafted by the user's legal counsel) to SoloLearn's Designated Agent following the Copyright Dispute Policy and they (he) will respond accordingly. https://www.sololearn.com/Copyright-Policy/ I hope this helps!

Maybe sololearn can create an algorithm that detects duplicate or copied code?

The only keys that need to be on a programmer's keyboard are CTRL, C and V. I put lots of effort into my code examples on Sololearn but would be happy if people learned from it and adapted for their use. I'd be happy helping them too. Sololearn gamified their site very well and made it fun to compete for "guru" and other rewards but let's get real about this. Unless you become the next Tetris Company and make a business out of copyright lawsuits, the code you publish will be used by others but only if it is worth copying. If Sololearn auto-detected copied code, they should have a trophy for the victim for making code so amazing that others copy it.

Yes. Ask the author or you could get in a lot of trouble. Nothing to be confused about. You must try and contacting the author. Or look for FREE code that others will let you copy.
