It depends on you. Some people love to watch video tutorials. Some people are more familiar with reading materials

If English is your Native Language, Video Tutorial is Good Enough otherwise PDF and Text based contents is necessary. In my opinion, PDF books have many advantages over Video Tutorial especially autonomy and self-confidence in learning harsh and complex concept

In my opinion, you should take help from both videos and books. I personally first take help from videos to get a basic grasp of things when learning something new, later on I dive deeper into the content by reading relevant books. Remember that if you want to learn some language and then master it, then its best to start with videos but books are a must have in this case, and off course practice is important as well. Good luck, have a great learning experience.

I think PDFs. A book, for example, can have more information than a video, and you can read it in you own pace(at least for me).

Videos help to keep concentration on the material. They are nice to introduce some theme. And pdf or other text information can be a good support while writing your own code. Aslo, for better understanding some special questions pdf are better, because it is easier to take your time while reading.

AS FOR OTHER LANGUAGES, THAT IS A DIFFERENT THREAD,, sorry abt the caps, if you want to know what Stanford offers you will have go lurk there but consider this: Java is a development that emerged from C and C++ and Stanford is giving it away to make better and more capable engineers that make it to graduation. As for Java being free, look at the industry it has been involved in from it's concept. Better, faster, stronger,... making embedded control allow the machines to rise up from the muck and mire of digital television decoders to billions of embeded installs to make a better whirld. Thank you Oracle, thank you SUN. JAVA took on embeded control and now it is everywhere,....resistance is futile. JAVA is the answer to the question, " How ?" . Java is the evolution of languages intended for embedded control and has obtained a HUGE Robust Market Share. Java is the language to get'r dun. IT is not the only language but it is still a champion.
