How does a Hot Today and Trending section works?

I asked this because I really wonder how it works. I made a code, it is on the list of Hot Today as well as on Trending section BUT after 2 days from its release date it's gone on the Hot Today section while the other codes which is week old and just basic was still on the list. Now my code can be only found on the Trending section. I really wonder how these sections work.

Not sure about the trending section, but 'Hot Today' seems to show the posts that have got the most number of upvotes in the last 24 hours. So if I posted something last week, and 10 people upvoted it today, then its usually on 'Hot Today'. But this is just the pattern that I've seen it follow, it could be something else altogether.

hmmm secret functions challenge: implement an algorithm for hot today and trending. criteria: upvotes comments(with aspect to different users) generally actual events should get more weight than events in the past.
