Anyone writes COBOL?

Who are the people who still writes it? What does it mainly do? Why is it used?

Most financial software is written in Cobol. Initially, it was designed for maintaining database like records that banks required. My first wife up until her retirement spent her entire working career writing or managing people who wrote Cobol. It was the only language she used professionally.

Last I checked, COBOL, CICS and AS/400 + clones are still used in the US Midwest. In support of John Wells' answer, major cities in the central states are common origins for periodic billing and (I believe) insurance of all types.

Most, if not all, big organisations which use mainframes and have a really large amount of daily data to handle use still cobol. I worked for a big german telecom corporation with a few big mainframes from IBM and Comparex. OS was IBM MVS 360
