Well, I can't think of a blockchain that doesn't run on cryptocurrency. Blocks of transactions take a lot of computing power to verify, so being able to "earn" cryptocurrency from contributing the required computing power is part of the incentive structure.

Blockchain is a distributed ledger.
It's actually not very important (yet), in my opinion. Even Ethereum is still in beta.
