Are self taught programmers better than normal programmers going to a course...?

It needs education AND experience.
Learn from teachers, there is no need to reinvent the wheel again in again. But with more advanced stuff it is easier to learn if you have already experiences.
I recommend to learn in course and try using the stuff in more or less parallel.
