im studying computer science and besides programming we also learn theoretical computer science, math and technical computer science. and that's just the first semester

Actually, CS involves programming. Usually C and an assembler because you'll have to program a small PCB at some point. Sources: A friend did CS and as one project he built a PCB (well added some parts to a hobbyist programmable one). It had a 16 x 16 LED matrix. It made a few cool patterns.
