My few experience is:
You can use either, which you want. Servlets are more on Java code, JSP on the other hand is more handy for design purposes. In the end, I think you can use either, how you like it. For request forwarding you should use servlets, which are simpler, but in JSP you can use even custom tags and so your design code can be more easily overviewed.
