Well if you want to build a game engine you will firstly have to know what kind graphic your engine will output (text game/2D or 3D for sure this last one is the hardest)... then with a mountain of time ahead you will need to get philosophies of OOP and probably MVC... use a versionning tool like Git to stock your code and keep historics... but the main is : "Passion".
