If you try it without the BR tag you will notice that the table row will look flat (comoressed) because it does not have any data.
So the BR (line break) is actually just a placeholder to make the table look prettier.

Later when you add formatting by CSS it will be easier to control the cell height so it won't be really necessary to resort to this trick.
