Why are there more males in programming than females?

This has been a constant debate in my AP CS class. Currently, we have 94 students taking some kind of programming class. Only 14 of those are girls. Any statistic will show that more males are taking CS degrees and jobs. Some of the reasons I've heard are: -Preferences -Patriarchy -Stereotypes -Societal expectations -The decline of feminism in America -Pressure from family -Biology/psychology (boys are just more inclined to) -Differences of the sexes. What do you think causes the gap?

I think some girls are not go for programming because they don't have interest in programming and some who wants to be a programmer are not give chance to complete their dream due to the mentality of people that it is a male dominating society and the field of programming also male dominating so they always ignore the talent of girls but we have to take an stand to complete our dream and show that girls can do better than boys in the field of programming 😊😊 // ignore my English I m not good in that😊😊

i think thats because females are not able to get good access to resources which males get without much hard work i see that more males are having smart phones than females also , mostly boys are inclined towards IT sector /*but all are born with same brain , some more luckier , those who work hard and smart wins // boys == girl (in the present time) , if false , then we can make it true */ //😊😊 👍

@Forge Ice You are absolutely right. But, i still wonder y there are no girls in such a rapid growing and safe field. And remember, being a nerd is awesome(at least sometimes)! :-P

I'm surprised and disappointed by the amount of people who say girls aren't interested in programming. The first programmer was a woman, Ada Lovelace, who wrote the first machine algorithm for an early computing machine in the 1840s. Without her we all wouldn't even be on SoloLearn having this discussion. Grace Hopper, another woman, was the first person to create a compiler for a programming language in the 1940s. Mary Wilkes was the first person to use a computer in a private home in the 60s. Jade Raymond is the founder of Electronic Arts' Motive Studios and Ubisoft Toronto and she is the producer of Sims Online and Assassin's Creed. There are so many important women in tech-- just Google "women programmers." What keeps a lot of women out of tech has been mentioned here briefly by a few people, a male dominated industry, stereotyping (as proven by the amount of people who say women aren't interested in tech), and a societal pressure and expectation to do something else, such as raise a family. Women ARE interested in tech, but there is so much working against them-- women software developers are paid 80% less than their male peers. In this industry there are still biases: a male coworker with a similar skill level as me will be expected to make mistakes because he is a new developer, but I will have to work twice as hard to constantly prove I belong in the field and was not just hired for my face or gender. It is not surprising at all to me that there is such a disproportionate amount of women in tech.

In my opinion, gals are not interested in these 'tech things' as boys are. So they go for something else. I am a class 11 cs student and more than half of the class strength is comprised of guys. And at the same time, go and take a look in the biology classes and u will find it hard to find as many boys as girls are ,in there. Don't know why gals are keeping distance from i.t field...!

it might depend on { *friends //some people follow their friends while choose carrier because in that field they can get help. directly from their friends *mentality //some people don't believe there self //some people demotivating them *interest //some people follow their blood interest like Sunil gavaskar family background from cricket// //some people like the facts rules or about that field// (I think both genders are equal but mostly depends on mentality)

I (electrical engineer) , during my engineering days at Nit Srinagar envied the higher number of girls in computer science . In an engineering institute you will see higher boys to girls ratio in computer science engineering than in any other field . Mechanical is about 50:1 boy to girl ratio . Electrical engineering is same . Civil engineering is degraded thing . Hardly any girl likes it or opts for it . I don't know bout anything else :)

Might be coz of the conservative thinking of many people and also due to their own choices girls don't go for cs but we have such places too where we can find more or least a bit equal amount of girls as boys and i myself am in 1st sem and have pursued cs branch! SO i really can't tell for which way i support but that was good quetion! for which from my side i don't really have a defined answer!!!! but of course those gals do exist who like cs, even love it!!!!

That's a little bit confusing or straight away better to say that everyone has their own choices too! And might be the ratio of people having different choices change!!!! its a change, can't say.

I think there is no universal answer. my mum was a machine engineer in East Germany and it was totally normal. then with unification with West Germany also society changed and they told her she should change her job. "because it's not a profession for women." but why? a second ago it was... I think human==human; if not : it's our responsibility to make it happen

Nerds are always thought to be physically weak. The majority of females want physically strong guys(Damn you, Evolution). There you got your answer @Annie

probably girls thinking it's a "male thing", which it definitely isn't. personal preferences + stereotypes are the most likely candidates.

@Oma Falk if they have such an awesome blended personality (James bond, sexiest man,etc).. they shud not wait for a girl to give no. as they themselves have a line of crushes behind them... as that's hopefully not the last left girl on planet... :p

The majority of males like Tech while only a minority of females likes Tech. That's why, you must have seen a girl showing more interest to romantic movies not Sci fi. We are evolved like this. Another reason I think is that many think of tech as nerd stuff, and I don't think girls like nerds, why would they want to become one then?
