What are the ticks and stars for on the discussion pages and how do you make the tick appear? Still a new be so I hope this is not a question with an obvious answer.

Ticks are for thread owners to mark Best Answer, i.e. the answer which helped the most. The star toggles thread subscription - Users will receive notifications for updates in subscribed threads
