What's it like as a software engineer and is the market getting over-saturated?

So I've been coding for about 8 months. I started with vb (hated it) And now I'm learning java. I plan to go to college for a cs degree and get an internship while there. I want to know what's it like to be one. is it a boring cubical job? and also is the market saturated. I heard about the TECH BOOM OF 2001 and how everyone wanted to be an electrical engineer and the market kinda died for it and I.T. will it happen to software devs?

Saturated... ? There is a great lack of programmers in the world, probably because of the not-humans standards of some companies. No idea if work as a programmer will be boring, i think it's a too general question which the answer can be variable in base to the interest of the programmer itself and the specific role for his job. Keep going. :)

Satured means there should be unemployed developpers. Do you see many of them ? Plus if you focus on the high demand qualifications (today : R, datascience,...) you have markets which are really in the favor of developpers...
