To make small apps to include in web apps written in Java. However, today this is not used anymore since JS and HTML have got a lot bettrr.

it was to add interactivity to the webpage with client side processing but soon flash replaced it and now JavaScript with html5 has taken the place. it's not much used as now we have JavaScript.
