Well it depends on what you want to do and why you picked Java. You might want to look into opengl and play with that with Java, maybe also make a few Android apps as they run in Java. I don't personally know Java but I would just learn to create instead of create to learn. I wouldn't worry about being the best, I would just make what makes me happy and that will improve.my knowledge over time.
