Not always, many companies hire based on skill. You'll just have to build a good enough portfolio. College makes things easier yes but you could find work as a freelancer IF you are good. Based on the fact that you don't know the answer to this already I'm assuming you haven't got the necessary skill set YET. Forgive me if I'm wrong but if not, just keep working at it. Keep learning and completely master a language. The IT field is competitive but I assure you that if you have the drive to get there, you will. Never give up, coding gets hard, it gets confusing. Dedicate yourself to it and code code code. When you're as good as you need to be you will find work. Good luck on your journey!

you need to have experience and a certification on that language and they require college on your curriculum
