SVG stands for (scalable vector graphics) ... the advantage of svgs is that it dosen't matter how much you zoom your webpage they keep their quality and scale the page.they behave like a font,its better to say like text of your page...you can use svg images for your webpage icons or use html svg for drawing shapes.

Basically vector graphic file. SVG however is just one of many vector graphic file formats with the other popular one being .ai, Adobe's proprietary file format for it's own vector graphic software.
