Often it's about problem-solving. How do I make this task easier for someone else (or myself)? A lot of times you are either recreating another real-world task or giving someone access to information they wouldn't have access to otherwise.

Like any other skill/profession, there are so many avenues that you can take that range from business and science apps to game and entertainment. There is really no limit to the possibilities, very often you can merge programming with other interests. That's when it can be the most fun.
