What is the reason behind on why they put slash on empty tags?

empty tags are unpaired tags such as <br> and <hr>. and i found the answer, it is because of xhtml 😄

slash </..> ends the tags or etc

i didnt see any enpty tags in html... the slash (/) is use to represent the end tag of any tag has been used. like, for <html>, there </html>
