What mindset do I need to have if I want to be a programmer?

My goal in life is to be a software engineer and now I'm just starting to learn the basics of my dream.It is hard to build things into pieces if I can't understand the concept. I'm not excellent in math but I really want to code. Maybe that is the huge obstacle I need to overcome. I need advice from veterans in this proffesion. Thanks in advance!
