What motivates you to be a programmer?

Was there any experience that set you on the path of programming or you just decided to try it out? Maybe it was a decision made by your parents. What is your own story?

though this may come off as pretentious, I feel that being a programmer is being godlike. You set the parameters, the rules, the landscape... and the user navigates through your creation. there is something really satisfying in being a creator.
