the lessons are mostly multiple choice or fill in the blanks because they're designed to test one concept and makes it easier to check your progress in a controlled manner.

code coach just checks for the correct answer and you are required come up with the algorithm yourself.

The code coaches are on this site, yes. I think they are a good suggestion. If you want some more Python practice (not course related), you can also try the game where you have to find bugs. Denfinitely helps for “real-world” scenarios!
