Just be careful with defining a career by a job title. The problem with defining a career by a job title is often times two employees at different companies with the same job title may be doing different work or two employees with different job titles at different companies may be doing the same work.

Think of careers in programming in terms of the system in which a programming helps implement. For example there are careers in:

1. Programming flight control software for use at airports. (Company example: Beontra)

2. Programming physical modelling software for use in scientific research. (Company example: Comsol)

3. Programming the game engines which video games run on (Company example: Epic Games)

4. Programming the video games themselves (Company example: 343 Industries)

5. Programming the GPS systems imbedded in a car's dash (Company example: Garmin)

6. Programming the electronic control units / command modules required to make a car function properly (Company example: Toyota or any other car manufacturer)

7. Programming the robotics required to put a car together at a manufacturing plant (Company example: Tesla or any other car manufacturer)

8. Programming engineering software — chemical engineering, biological engineering, civil/infrastructure engineering, ect. (Company example: you name it)

X. The list of possible careers in programming, in my opinion, has one of the most diverse and numerous possibilities out of all of the technical skills. Because in our modern society many industries try to automate and standardize as many parts of a system as possible. And so you could essentially work and do programming for almost any industry.

To think of careers in programming try to think of SYSTEMS. Many technological systems run on the microprocessor which requires programming to implement.

Systems are a bit more specific than job titles. Person A with a career in #1 and Person B with a career in #2 could both have the job title "Software Engineer." Although they have the same job title they could not easily swap careers. They would have to go through further training to transition into each other's or a new career.

Choose a programming career based on what doors are open to you or what system you naturally find interesting. Something you find interesting you will actively spend more time in and thus get better at, thus further propelling your career forward.

In terms of specificity focusing in scope of a career in programming I'd say it goes:
Job Title > System > Company
