its some kind of short form. You are just writing <nav> instead of <div class="nav"> (or <div id="nav">). Also its probably better for seo too (really dont know much).

nav tags were created to tell the browser that this section is the navigation menu and all link are important and it is also created for better navigation menu compatibility with tablets and mobile devices
