Mirielle it is not true that NetBeans is abandoned and obsolete. On the contrary it is under active development. But it's true that these days it has become less popular than IntelliJ.

I don't recommend IDEs for beginners.
If you're new to the Java programming language how about using the code playground to practice?
You can avoid all the extra need to set up your development environment and start learning right away.
