Because you are studying the programming language but not how to build the projects.

First time I learn programming, I was interested to write coding but at the same time, I start to feel what should I do when I know how to code. Then I do realize that there is only one way to increase my skills, it is "Build the Projects by Yourself". It may be just for fun but the more you build the projects, the more you will have experiences and barriers. Don't just study the language. Language proficiency won't give you anything because you can refer the APIs to see how the output is coming. But the main thing is try to learn Logic, and other Software Engineering Practices to increase your skills.

Just kidding... But in all seriousness if java is what you want to learn then you will learn it no matter how boring it is. But if you don't want to learn it then I guess it can never be fun.
