Git is a version control tool. You can roll your own git server or make use of services like GitHub, GitLab, etc. As for the name git... "Git" is British slang meaning "a rotten person," Torvalds (creator of git) said "I'm an egotistical bastard, so I name all my projects after myself. First Linux, now git."
