Hello Inderjeet..To get place in IT companies, it is require that you should have programming knowledge, and having basic knowledge in C is very good but try to be more good in Java or C++ or rather in any other object oriented language because many projects are developed in oop languages like Java, C#, PHP, Python and try to learn SQL language also coz it will help you to have some knowledge in database systems.

No it's not mandatory that if you know Java then you must know SQL also...SQL is totally different language and is used in database management systems where the data or information is stored for permanent...but in many of the interviews DBMS is hot topic for them and if you have good knowledge in it, then it's a chance that they might get impress.

You can refer javatpoint.com or tutorialspoint.com for the basic course in Java and the book you are referring 'The head first Java' is a nice book along with that 'Complete reference in Java' is also a good book to refer.
