what's a buffer??

Can somebody give me a dumbed down definition of buffers? My prof is always talking about buffers and using flush...but I dont really get what buffers do...what are some examples of it?

Buffer is nothing but a temporary memory on a computer which is used while transmitting or receiving data from other memory or devices.

here is one answer https://www.sololearn.com/Discuss/1534393/?ref=app an example of this have you ever experience your computer hang or not responding while do something like typing ? you continue typing or clicking randomly, but no changes on screen.when the computer back to normal those text suddenly appear and the clicks are registered ? those input originally wasnt lost, it was stored in buffer. when computer back to normal it read the buffer then process them as your input.
