Operating Systems all implement a directory hierarchies on their internal storage media. There are minor differences between them, but basically they are all the same. Removable devices initially had similar differences, but that made it difficult to use the same device on two different systems. Therefore, a standard was made to make it easy. All removable devices support that standard these days. This prevents putting one into a second system and making it unusable to or destroying information of the first.
