2 years is a bit young maybe. 😉 A bit later, one might go by fruit. Like 1 apple, 2, apples, 3 apples... Only full apples are integers, so half an apple or a quarter of an apple is not integer.

addition to HonFu an Integer can also be negative, for example if sb lends you an apple you have debt on 1 apple or weirdly said you have -1 apple, since you have to return it to the person that gave it to you

Eeh, Airree, I'm sure any 2 year old will understand your explanation.

All explanations have something in common. Integers are numbers like the ones used for counting.

Let me make it more clear: one apple and two apples and three apples are acceptable as integers. Half of an apple or quarter of an apple isn't acceptable. But sometimes you borrow apple from someone and eat it. So you should give him/her back one apple. That's what we call -1. numbers like -1 (like -2 or -11) are acceptable as integers, too.

Integers are numbers. Nothing more to say as 2 year olds most probably don't know about fractions and real numbers.

Eeh.. HonFu they are more like natural numbers. Integers are numbers that, if rewritten with division, the divisor in smallest terms is 1. Or, those bad boys without decimal places. Probably more simple to understand Or, an example: money. You can have 0 coins, or a thousand coins, or a debt of 10 coins (-10 coins), but you can't have a half coin, because that's illegal. Some integers: 0 691 -474 Some not integers: 0.56 6.91 -47.4747
