If you're asking me what I think is cool and awesome, I'm a gamer so I'd say make a game with C++.

Try to write a tic-tac-toe game. It may sound easy but it is a lot of details.
If thats too easy, try to write a good automatic player.
If thats too easy, try to write an unbeatable player.
If thats too easy, make it play a game at less than a second.
