You don't have to use a certain SDLCM but it is a good idea to do so. It would be a pitty to recognize missing requirements at delivering time. Your customer would not be amused. Or not doing architectual work, as it would be guaranteed that your software will miss the required qualities your customer asked for.

Depending on how many phases you take into account it can start from the Requirement phase or the Planning phase.
