Probably Linux for most generic stuff but the landscape has changed recently with mobile devices and due to more generic programming now being possible on Windows. So what Dragonxiv said is quite valid.

I think the best operating system for a developer is the one that runs his favorite IDE well ๐Ÿ’ป. I also agree with Dragonxiv. I would recommend Linux Mint because it is beginner friendly, just like Sololearn.

Linux and Windows Server is good for powering servers. A Mac is good for all the major operating systems(Mobile and Desktop) But can get away with Windows or Linux! However you can build yourself a Hackintosh(A PC running mac os instead of windows or linux)

The landscape has really shifted for all operating systems. If you want to develop for all desktops you can just use java or even javascript with electron. It's also possible you develop your app online and anyone can use it. Although I think linux is the best choice if you are comfortable and fast with an os you don't really need to switch.

Well, to be honest, Iโ€™m using Debian Linux, because it contains everything that I need: compilers, interpreters, and IDE in its own repository. Of course Iโ€™m talking about Debian testing, because stable is too ancient for me c;

If you are developping for mobile(phones et tablets), Mac Os is a good choice because applications for Apple's phones and tablets are only dรฉvelopped on Mac Os.
