Terrific question... Being a developer today is not like it used to...If you think about it, we are in a world where coding is becoming less impressive. Everyone builds sites, It's no longer just the nerdy who can create sites, apps and features. This adds personal qualities to the pot as well other than just raw coding. Society expects more and more of our digital life as we go so you need to be more than a code-generating grunt worker. The header on chapter 3 in "The passionate programmer" says: " Coding don't cut it any more. " I remember my first week in the business... I never realized how much we actually present something graphically on a daily basis. The quantity of drawing compared to the hours of coding is ridiculous. (100 drawings in 6 hours would not cut it some days!) To even consider a front-end job you must be able to draw your ideas on whiteboard, paper and beer mats. Not to mention, be able to do prototypes on paper, printing screenshots and scribble on them just to communicate their intention. "Understand our audience." - Whether it is the customer, the users, our project members or even our bosses, we must be absolute sure of the people around us and what they expect of us. Which brings me to the next point. "Key aspects in web developing..." "Wide", because you need to understand the world as a human working with other humans. "Deep" because you need thorough technical knowledge below the level of your part of the project. Besides that we also need understanding about business, operations and the business processes. Why? - Because this knowledge helps us get our code to hit the "scenes" and go official. We use to say: "Know the rules to use your tools." Last and certainly not least... Remember to enjoy the code – love the art of indenting CSS files perfectly, or optimising a rails app. They always serve a purpose further on. Also... Stay sharp. Find competition. The worst kind of anything is one in isolation. Thanks for your time invested in this! www.github.com/TristanMcCullen
