Embedded world is shifting to C++, You might want to tend to learn OOP programming , I recomend you to read Miro Samek's books

By embedded system, you mean a software that runs 24x7 with fault-tolerant features. A good example are ATMs, and related technologies.
Linux and C language is a good choice. Focus more on the funtionality and fault-tolerance first
