The answer depends on if you have a true IT department or you are the department. In the former, having knowledge of sql and php Will be valuable for web development. In the latter knowing python would be useful for application development for data mining etc. However, neither of these are helpful if the company is heavily C oriented. All of the above is dependent on a company that is not using commercial or outsourced services for applications. My IT department was more oriented to hardware and equipment than internal software development. Though we did use c, batch, and basic for our own department. We also had to instantly know how to use various software packages our sales and accounting departments were using. This was so we could remain the mystical computer geek/god that they believed in. Never limit your future by restricting your own knowledge. Train to the task that will get you the job, and put you closer to the next step. But always keep stepping.

"Better for work" depends on what your "work" is and what tools your company wants you to use. Python may be more popular, but in this context there is no correct answer for this question.
