Can I create a graphic design portfolio for someone who hasn't supplied graphics to showcase?

I have a friend who is a graphic designer that I would like to create a cool portfolio for. They are still a beginner and don't have many works to display. Could I create them a cool portfolio without any recent work supplied? I'm asking because I know that a graphic designers portfolio is a little different from the average portfolio.

I would suggest just getting some high quality images of their work, and then perhaps showcasing them in a slider if it's not many, or in a tab form similar to Pinterest, or perhaps a list style with description. Honestly, most graphic designers starting out just use Facebook. Then they make their website and showcase stuff on there. Good luck.
